Why Moving Your Body Can Change Your Life

That’s a bold statement, right? Moving your body can change your life. But it’s true. Anytime I think about movement and changing your life, I always think of Legally Blonde and Elle Woods.

Moving your body can be anything. You can shake your butt to your favorite song, (May I suggest Uptown Funk or Can’t Stop the Feeling?) take a walk, jump on a rebounder (you can find the one I have here), dance with your kids, take your dog for a walk, go up and down the stairs, do some yoga, go to the gym, do whatever..just move!

Movement can
1) Improve your mood– As Elle stated, moving releases endorphins in the brains such as dopamine, serotonin, and epinephrine. Dopamine is considered the happy body made drug. It’s released anytime you do something that’s connected to pleasure like eating chocolate, sex, and exercise (among other things). It also can be released when it’s connected to unhealthy habits such as smoking, stress eating, drugs and other things similar to that. Replacing unhealthy habits with good habits like exercise will train your brain to connect it to pleasure. This is how someone who hates running can eventually enjoy it.

2. Reduce anxiety and depression– According the Mayo Clinic, exercise can help release the good endorphins that are connected to pleasure and it also helps take your mind off worries. Moving can help you relax and decrease the overactive brain. It also helps you cope in a more healthy way with your depression and anxiety. It’s so much better than just laying in bed with your own thoughts, right? In my experience, it’s really hard to yell at myself when I’m trying to stay on a treadmill..hahahaha.

3. Help with sleep– Since movement can relax the brain, it helps keep it from being overactive at night, thus keeping you awake.

4. Jolt you out of a bad mindset– If you’re having a bad day and you stop and throw some movement in it, it can allow your brain to destress, release endorphins and just chill. It can take the frustration or anxiety that led to that mindset to help you refocus it more constructively. Plus, it can help your mind reset and tackle whatever you need to tackle a little more refreshed.

If movement is done on a consistent basis, then over time your body will start to crave it because of all the good it does to for you. You’ll find yourself more relaxed, have less stress, and maybe even a little happier.
