Happy Valentine’s Day..to me!

It’s Valentine’s Day!

That means chocolates, flowers and other goodies from those that love or even like you. I mean I’d show you the candy I got from the husband but I ate it before I could take a picture. Chocolate for breakfast on Valentine’s day is perfectly acceptable right?

But what about you. Are you taking time to love yourself? Are you giving yourself the gift of love the same way that you would give yourself? Probably not.

When it comes to love, let’s be real, often we are the last things that we think about giving love to. Certainly not ourselves. It’s pretty much anybody  but ourselves, especially for women. If we treated our special someone or our BFF the way we do ourselves, they would be long gone.

I don’t know what it is about our sub-species but often put everyone first BESIDES ourselves. It’s not just society that have put it out there that women need to take on everything but we, ourselves, see it as something that we have to do and is expected of us and that’s just the way that it is. So we take care of ourselves last.

I experienced this when I was taking care of my dying father. For a while I kept to gratitude journalling, meditation and reading things that fed my mind. I was able to sneak away for hikes with the dog or to the gym. As he got more dependent on me, I stopped being able to escape as much. I felt stressed out, short tempered and tired. All. The. Time. After he passed, that burnout continued for a few months. I continued to put myself on the back burner because now I was home and had to focus on the family I had left to take care of him. Not only was I short with everyone, but I quit doing things I loved. I stopped doing simple things like taking a bath or putting on a mask.

I say taking care of ourselves last is utter and complete BULLSHIT!

The fact of the matter is that by taking time for ourselves leads to a much more happier and fulfilled life. When we fill depleted, our ability to give ourselves to other tasks is greatly diminished. We find ourselves getting short with the people around us. We don’t think as clearly. We don’t sleep. Our business will start faltering. We don’t shine the way we were meant to shine.

There’s a misconception that in order to take care of ourselves we have to spend hours at a spa, ignore the kids, and do, what’s perceived as selfish for hours at a time.

It is NOT selfish to put yourself first. Let me repeat it for those in the back…It is NOT selfish to put yourself first.

Here’s a list of 10 ways you can put yourself first.
1. Pour yourself a glass of wine and take a bubble bath
2. Read a good book.
3. Pamper yourself with a good face mask.
4. Put on your favorite scent or lotion.
5. Put on some makeup
6. Write out a list about all the things your thankful for in your life
7. Write love notes to yourself about all the ways you love yourself.
8. Meditate
9. Take yourself to lunch.
10. Workout

Remember, you cannot fill others from an empty cup.

Now go get your self-love on!
